Wednesday afternoon

Second try today. Still at work, still raining. It's been raining for almost 2 weeks now...reminds me more of late October than late August/early September. Flash flood warnings nearly every day--it's easy to see how some folks get a bit jaded, and ignore all the postings. Scary stuff, considering how easy it is for a "harmless" little stream to wash away a car or truck. It happens all the time, though, and I can't figure out why so many people find it necessary/important to drive right around barricades and into the water. I used to live out in the country, and had to make detours all the time...pain in the rear, but I just wasn't willing to take any chances with flood waters. I had a friend who was walking too close to Shoal Creek a couple of years ago, and was washed away. They found her body several hours later, and I still wonder why she was walking so close to the bank. Lots of people who knew her had all kinds of "stories" to tell (ones they made up), and none of them were good. It was enough that she died--adding a "legend" to it didn't change the fact that she was gone. Maybe she was sober and just slipped, or not. It doesn't really matter in the end. All that matters is that a good friend is gone, a friend that I'll miss for a long, long time. Another friend mentioned Connie yesterday, and it brought it all back to mind...no wonder I'm still thinking about it (and writing about it) today. Godspeed you on your way, girlfriend!
