Media martyr? Let's review...

The last time I checked a dicitonary, the word martyr was reserved for a person who was killed as a result of their religious/spiritual beliefs. Does he honestly believe that he's being persecuted for his selfless motives? Was the $5000 in so-called expense money given, even in part, to offset his daughter's medical expenses?
