Excuses, excuses
Organ donor flap continues
I have only one question:
Since when was an autopsy not performed during an organ donation?
Surely this procedure would answer any questions an investigation may have, or does this police department have another way of determining cause of death that the rest of the world doesn't know about? I'd be interested in hearing more about their criminal investigative techinques, but then again, maybe not. In any event, it seems this particular law enforcement agency has some serious explaining to do, and for good reason.

However, I can't help wondering how the "we won't negotiate with terrorists" footware rubs on the achilles heel of the die-hard, stay-the-course, we're-just-following-orders crowd at fox news. Just wondering.

So long, farewell, etcetera...
Users find .Mac underwhelming, overpriced
After eight or so years with the same dot mac address, watching it go from "free lifetime email" to subscription, and waiting for something, ANYTHING to justify a hundred bucks a year, I'm quitting. No more, thank you very much. I'm done with the crappy email service (ie, spam from all directions), the ultra-slow idisk, and the general lack of return on the what I've spent (actually, wasted). If you, too, are fed up--one caution: figuring out how to cancel your account is the worst runaround of all. The dot mac website, the apple support website, the emails from apple...NONE offer any clues as to how to get their hands out of your credit card account each year with their oh-so-convenient automatic renewal. Solution? Remove the automatic renewal on your account page at dotmac (keep digging, you'll find it eventually), save the change, and cross your fingers. It's not like they have a tech support number that you can call and make sure the change was recorded...heck no, that would be too much like customer service, and we can't have that, now can we, apple? PFFT...

Is this a serious question?
CNN.com - The disaster response: 'Magnificent' or 'embarrassment'? - Sep 2, 2005
Just as "disasater" and "devastation" cannot begin to describe the horror that has become New Orleans, it is a disgrace to even consider the idea that the federal government has done anything even remotely constructive to help the citizens of its own country. Our elected ("purchased" and "hand-picked" are probably a bit more accurate) officials are busy patting each other on the ass, congratulating themselves while thousands of people along the Gulf coast haven't had anything to eat or drink in days, not to mention that their lives and homes have been washed completely away. My heart hurts with the pain of knowing how deeply wounded our country is right now, and how things will never be the same.
Why does the local Red Cross not know about these agencies?

Earlier this week, I called the Red Cross and volunteered to help on the phones. If their office is any indication of the level of incompetence at the national level, I pity the people left homeless and desperate by Hurricane Katrina. There are ways to help, many ways to help, other than the Red Cross, thank God, and I sincerely hope that the American people think twice about where and how their generosity is spent.

October 2004, National Geographic Magazine article
Louisiana's Wetlands @ National Geographic Magazine
The nightmare has become a reality for New Orleans, and the Gulf coast from Louisana to Mississippi to Alabama and even as far away as Florida, is reeling from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Thievery is alive and well...
I came to work this morning, only to find that someone had stolen my extension cord. Sounds trivial (does the "red stapler" saga come to mind?), but this is a chronic problem in the building where I work. I've had a number of items stolen from my desk--mostly small stuff, like pens and post-it notes, but I've also had a book stolen and now my extension cord. This wouldn't be such a big deal, except that I have a plate in my leg and crawling around on the floor to find a free outlet is not an option right now. If I want to use my laptop, or charge my cell phone, or just listen to a cd, an extension cord is a necessity.
Maybe the same person who stole my book has taken the extension cord as well...and will plug in a light and read "Real Stories from the Old Testament," which just happens to be the book that came up missing. Perhaps a little bit of spirituality will help this person see the difference between right and wrong. Or not. Hope springs eternal, Alice Springs, Australia, and all that. Oh well.

My sentiments exactly!
The 'I' word - The Boston Globe - Boston.com - Op-ed - News
Ralph Nader and Kevin Zeese have put into words what more and more people are beginning to ask...why isn't the administration being called to testify before a congressional committee? Specifically, why isn't the ever-increasing stack of documentation being treated as a conspiracy against the American people? How long will it take for them to realize that these are not trivial charges, and that impeachment proceedings may be the only way out of this quagmire of lies and half-lies?

Linking of Databases under the Real ID Program
: "SEC. 203. LINKING OF DATABASES.
(a) In General- To be eligible to receive any grant or other type of financial assistance made available under this title, a State shall participate in the interstate compact regarding sharing of driver license data, known as the `Driver License Agreement', in order to provide electronic access by a State to information contained in the motor vehicle databases of all other States.
(b) Requirements for Information- A State motor vehicle database shall contain, at a minimum, the following information:
(1) All data fields printed on drivers' licenses and identification cards issued by the State.

Man who advertised on billboards for liver dies
The real tragedy is, in my opinion, that his selfishness and willingness to trample on the rights of others gained him only a few short months. Was it worth the pain and distress he caused so many others waiting on the transplant list? Perhaps this is the question his family needs to consider rather than dodging reporters and issuing statements touting his "service" to the transplant community.

1. Why no link to the story? Awfully nice of you to cut and paste it for your readers, but why not let us read it for ourselves? Of course, there is the small matter of editorial license, which is alive and well, as one can see clearly when browsing your blog.
2. Why the delay in posting? This article was posted over a month ago, and has been widely read and commented upon by a number of people.
3. Are you, or is any member of your direct family, now on the transplant waiting list? Just curious. Not that it would make any difference in your "spin," of course. To be sure.

Brought down the established order?
bookofjoe: BehindTheMedspeak: Robert Hickey, world's first internet-kidney recipient, writes bookofjoe
Is that so? Do you really suppose one person's selfish attempt to place his own needs, along with the aid of several thousand dollars I might add, is that heroic? As a medical doctor (which he is), Mr. Hickey may want to address the ethics (or lack thereof) involved in his arrangement with both the website and the donor. Then again, I doubt that he would see it that way. After all, he's gotten what he wants, so the rest of the 184,000 plus recipients can just wait...unless, of course, Mr. Hickey would be willing to fork over some of that cold hard cash for a website listing for a someone who's been financially bankrupted by our medical establishment. How 'bout spreading some of that "love" around, if he's such a philanthropist? Then again, he may be too busy. Forget I mentioned it.

On Bush and Lighting
Aces Full of Links: On Bush and Lighting
How many Bush administration officials does it take to change a light bulb?
None. There’s nothing wrong with that light bulb. There is no need to change anything. We made the right decision and nothing has happened to change our minds. People who criticize this light bulb now, just because it doesn’t work anymore, supported us when we first screwed it in, and when these flip-floppers insist on saying that it is burned out, they are merely giving aid and encouragement to the Forces of Darkness.

It would be interesting to hear the answers to these questions in relation to the recent brokering that went on between the retired medical excutive and the truck driver with a heart of gold. (Sarcasm is quite intentional, by the way.)
Media martyr? Let's review...
Internet Kidney Donor Glad He Donated
With a potential movie/book deal in the offing, this individual has assumed the self-proclaimed title of "media martyr."
The last time I checked a dicitonary, the word martyr was reserved for a person who was killed as a result of their religious/spiritual beliefs.
Dicitonary.com definition of "martyr"
martyr: \Mar"tyr\, n. [AS., from L. martyr, Gr. ma`rtyr, ma`rtys, prop., a witness; cf. Skr. sm[.r] to remember, E. memory.] 1. One who, by his death, bears witness to the truth of the gospel; one who is put to death for his religion; 2. Hence, one who sacrifices his life, his station, or what is of great value to him, for the sake of principle, or to sustain a cause. Source: Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary, © 1996, 1998 MICRA, Inc.
Would he have us believe that his motives were that exalted? Perhaps my cynicism is showing, but who is he kidding? Does he honestly believe that he's being persecuted for his selfless motives? Was the $5000 in so-called expense money given, even in part, to offset his daughter's medical expenses? Come now, Mr. Smitty, you don't really expect us to be that gullible, now do you? Or perhaps you do...pity.

Authorities seeking Internet organ donor

Web pact for kidney draws fire
This story gets more convoluted by the minute. A convicted drug felon, only recently off probation, who donates a major organ out of the good ness of his heart? Why does that so-called goodness not extend to the care and medical bills of his ten year old daughter?
And the recipient is a retired medical company executive? Had he not heard of the ethics committee either? Were the hospitals and doctors he had business relationships with also the same doctors that allowed this brokered deal to be consummated?
Of course, there is the matter of an ongoing financial relationship, voluntary or not, between donor and recipient. After all, there are those pesky attorney bills, court costs, etc. that will no doubt arise from the extradition process.

A Day in the Life of Joe Republican
Forwarded to me in an email...thanks, Peg!
A Day in the Life of Joe Republican
Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and safe because some tree-hugging liberal fought for maximum water-quality standards.
With his first swallow of coffee, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to insure their safety and that they work as advertised.
All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer's medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance - and now Joe gets it, too.
He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe's bacon is safe to eat because some girlie-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat-packing industry.
In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body.
Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our atmosphere.
He walks to the subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.
Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards.
Joe's employer pays these standards because Joe's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he'll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some ridiculous liberal didn't think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.
It's noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe's deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe's money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.
Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime.
Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards.
He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers' Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans. The house didn't have electricity until some big-government liberal (FDR) stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification.
He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking,
quiche-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn't have to.
Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn't mention that the beloved conservative Republicans fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day.
Joe agrees: "We don't need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I'm a self-made man! All Americans should take care of themselves, just as I have."

Mark Morford at his most articulate...
As Oprah Slaps Bush / With 30 states poised to smack down women's rights again, the one true savior emerges
Listen up, guys amd gals...this is not fun and games any more. King George II is playing for keeps, and he's counting on the apathy of the American voters to guarantee him another chance at rolling back the clock even further. Short answer: don't let him.

Mark Morford's take on the American way of life
Why Don't Americans Care? / Do you know who Halliburton is? Dick Cheney? How about Karl Rove? Alas, most Americans don't
What's even more disturbing is that he's summed up in only a few paragraphs what most of us have know/felt for quite some time. The real question remains...what can be done to turn this around? Assuming, of course, that something CAN be done.
This is just about clear as mud...

Abbott and Costello in the 21st Century
ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?
COSTELLO: Thanks. I'm setting up an office in my den, and I'm thinking about buying a computer.
ABBOTT: Mac?
COSTELLO: No, the names Lou.
ABBOTT: Your computer?
COSTELLO: I don't own a computer. I want to buy one.
ABBOTT: Mac?
COSTELLO: I told you, my names Lou.
ABBOTT: What about Windows?
COSTELLO: Why? Will it get stuffy in here?
ABBOTT: Do you want a computer with Windows?
COSTELLO: I don't know. What will I see when I look in the windows?
ABBOTT: Wallpaper.
COSTELLO: Never mind the windows. I need a computer and software.
ABBOTT: Software for Windows?
COSTELLO: No. On the computer! I need something I can use to write proposals, track expenses and run my business. What have you got?
ABBOTT: Office.
COSTELLO: Yeah, for my office. Can you recommend anything?
ABBOTT: I just did!
COSTELLO: You just did what?
ABBOTT: Recommend something.
COSTELLO: You recommended something?
ABBOTT: Yes.
COSTELLO: For my office?
ABBOTT: Yes
COSTELLO: OK, what did you recommend for my office?
ABBOTT: Office.
COSTELLO:.Yes, for my office!
ABBOTT: I recommend Office with Windows.
COSTELLO: I already have an office and it has windows! OK, lets just say, I'm sitting at my and computer I want to type a proposal. What do I need?
ABBOTT: Word.
COSTELLO: What word?
ABBOTT: Word in Office.
COSTELLO: The only word in office is office.
ABBOTT: The Word in Office for Windows.
COSTELLO: Which word in office for windows?
ABBOTT: The Word you get when you click the blue W.
COSTELLO: I'm going to click your blue w if you don't start with some straight answers. OK, forget that. Can I watch movies on the Internet?
ABBOTT: Yes, you want RealOne.
COSTELLO: Maybe a real one, maybe a cartoon. What I watch is none of your business. Just tell me what I need!
ABBOTT: RealOne.
COSTELLO: If its a long movie I also want to see reel 2, 3 & 4. Can I watch them?
ABBOTT: Of course.
COSTELLO: Great, with what?
ABBOTT: RealOne.
COSTELLO; OK, I'm at my computer and I want to watch a movie. What do I do?
ABBOTT: You click the blue 1.
COSTELLO: I click the blue one what?
ABBOTT: The blue 1.
COSTELLO: Is that different from the blue W?
ABBOTT: The blue 1 is RealOne and the blue W is Word.
COSTELLO: What word?
ABBOTT: The Word in Office for Windows.
COSTELLO: But there's three words in office for windows!
ABBOTT: No, just one. But its the most popular Word in the world.
COSTELLO: It is?
ABBOTT: Yes, but to be fair, there aren't many other Words left. It pretty much wiped out all the other Words out there.
COSTELLO: And that word is the real one?
ABBOTT: RealOne has nothing to do with Word. RealOne isn't even part of Office.
COSTELLO: Stop! Don't start that again. What about financial bookkeeping, do you have anything I can track my money with?
ABBOTT: Money.
COSTELLO: That's right. What do you have?
ABBOTT: Money.
COSTELLO: I need money to track my money?
ABBOTT: It comes bundled with your computer.
COSTELLO: What's bundled to my computer?
ABBOTT: Money.
COSTELLO: Money comes with my computer?
ABBOTT: Yes. No extra charge.
COSTELLO: I get a bundle of money with my computer? How much?
ABBOTT: One copy.
COSTELLO: Isn't it illegal to copy money?
ABBOTT: Microsoft gave us a license to copy Money.
COSTELLO: They can give you a license to copy money?
ABBOTT: Why not, they own it.

In Defense of Biblical Marriage
The Presidential Prayer Team is currently urging us to: "Pray for the President as he seeks wisdom on how to legally codify the definition of marriage. Pray that it will be according to Biblical principles. With any forces insisting on variant definitions of marriage, pray that God's Word and His standards will be honored by our government." This is true.
Any good religious person believes prayer should be balanced by action. So here, in support of the Prayer Team's admirable goals, is a proposed Constitutional Amendment codifying marriage entirely on biblical principles:
A. Marriage in the United States shall consist of a union between one man and one or more women. (Gen 29:17-28; II Sam 3:2-5)
B. Marriage shall not impede a man's right to take concubines in addition to his wife or wives. (II Sam 5:13; I Kings 11:3; II Chron 11:21)
C. A marriage shall be considered valid only if the wife is a virgin. If the wife is not a virgin, she shall be executed. (Deut
22:13-21)
D. Marriage of a believer and a non-believer shall be forbidden. (Gen 24:3; Num 25:1-9; Ezra 9:12; Neh 10:30)
E. Since marriage is for life, neither this Constitution nor the constitution of any State, nor any state or federal law, shall be construed to permit divorce. (Deut 22:19; Mark 10:9)
F. If a married man dies without children, his brother shall marry the widow. If he refuses to marry his brother's widow or
deliberately does not give her children, he shall pay a fine of one shoe and be otherwise punished in a manner to be determined by law. (Gen. 38:6-10; Deut 25:5-10)
G. In lieu of marriage, if there are no acceptable men in your town, it is required that you get your dad drunk and have sex with him (even if he had previously offered you up as a sex toy to men young and old), tag-teaming with any sisters you may have. Of course, this rule applies only if you are female. (Gen 19:31-36)
